La présence et le témoignage de l’arrière-petit-fils du roi Batanga, abattu le 8 août 1914, est à l’origine de ce récit: retracer la vie de ce souverain résistant dont les exploits militaires sont passés sous silence au Cameroun. Le contexte colonial allemand, la condamnation du roi à l’échafaud et la grande déportation de la population locale vers le sud-ouest entre 1915 et 1916 seront passés en revue ainsi qu’un rappel tout aussi nécessaire du rôle joué par ce roi dans la pénétration de la mission presbytérienne américaine au Cameroun.\nKribi, a coastal town in Cameroon, still bears the scars of German colonization and the bloody episodes of World War I. The presence and testimony of the great-grandson of King Batanga, who was shot on August 8, 1914, is the inspiration for this story: to retrace the life of this resistant sovereign whose military exploits have been overlooked in Cameroon. The German colonial context, the king’s condemnation of the scaffold, and the large-scale deportation of the local population to the southwest between 1915 and 1916 will be reviewed, as well as a much-needed reminder of the role played by this king in the penetration of the American Presbyterian mission in Cameroon.\n \n\n
