Ce sont là les vestiges scintillants d’un lac préhistorique, encore visibles depuis l’espace. Des changements saisonniers extrêmes rythment toute vie dans ces étendues salées. La chaleur accablante et la poussière cèdent la place à des pluies vivifiantes, tandis que les baobabs résistent aux éléments et s’y adaptent depuis des siècles. Ce sont des sanctuaires de vie, offrant nourriture et refuge à la faune sauvage et aux habitants qui les recherchent dans l’un des lieux les plus inhospitaliers d’Afrique.\nOn the edges of Botswana’s vast Makgadikgadi salt pans — shimmering remnants of a prehistoric lake still visible from space — stand Africa’s oldest living beings: the baobab trees. Extreme seasonal changes dominate all life in the pans. Scorching heat and dust give way to life-bringing rains, while the baobabs, for centuries, have withstood and adapted to the elements.
